Valentine Day in History

Valentine’s Day is an old tradition thought to have originated from a Roman Festival known as Lupercalia, according to It was formerly held on Feb. 15 as a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. I believe the story is not new to us. The question now is: Someone disobeyed and died in prison in the name of lust – not love. Does it call for celebration or reflection? Or do we have any moral justification for that?

Anyway, I am not too surprised because “my people” are also celebrating or Marking what I called “The Return of Criminals”. The festival survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed at the end of the 5th century when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St Valentine’s Day.

As a student in quest of knowledge, I have trawled through the history books to find out the real reasons behind the so-called Lovers day but the background casts a very different light on the holiday.

Let’s pretend to accept Valentine day as lovers day, I mean picking a day in the name of love but no discerning man will appreciate the way it has been celebrated. The way it has been celebrated ‘then” is better compared to what we have “now”. What we celebrate on Feb. 14 today is “Ruin Day or Lust Day”. During the celebrations, boys would draw names of girls from a box and the pair would be partners during the festival. These matches often led to marriage. Marriage build on a game will surely end on the game!

This practice is showcase by the majority of workers in their respective places. A married person will tag himself or herself with another person. They will engage in all things meant for husband and wife. A day marriage! What is now the difference between what they practised on V-DAY and Adultery? Indeed, our society is Sick – We need standard hospitals and capable doctors (reformers).

Symbols of love:

This is where we also missed the target of true love – the generation of strange youth! Love does not represent heart with any arrow. So why should we celebrate Valentine like that of Sango’s Festival (god of thunder)? Ask yourself if truly we show love on V-DAY, Why should it be based on colour known to be a danger? To be candid, Valentine is not favourable for the masses. This is the day anything in Red is more expensive than any other colour. How do we want to cope with high cost of living in the recession?

It has also been argued that “heart with cupid arrow” does not represent symbols of love. Dr Zafaran Adeniyi wrote in his book titled “Love Online”: ……….. Nobody will in today’s world deny the magical effect of this symbol (love symbol) in the circle of lovers but the origin as earlier mentioned is shrouded in different presumptions. More so, the symbol as popularly referred to as heart is never so. The heart is not fully red or shaped as the common love symbol.

So, if you draw a fake red heart with that invented cupid arrow. You will be the one to explain what your diagram represents. And if use it to celebrate anything, you will also need to tell the world what you are celebrating. But what is closer is that of Sango’s Festival. Get it clear; Heart coupled with an arrow does not represent symbols of love. You can read more argument on symbols of love on your Google. There is enough to read.

V-DAY: Celebration of Love or Lust?

Love is the most misunderstood word by our youth. Everyone loves to be loved. An average woman is looking for that man that will walk straight to her and whisper the intoxicating word “I love you” to her hearing. Men are also searching the four walls of the world to keep Miss Right beside him.
The word: “I love you” is now like a morning drug prescribed by a certified doctor (God) but misused by an impatient user (youth). God has made love a drug to heal our soul but unfortunately for us, it kills us and steal away most people’s senses.

History has recorded so many suicides due to mismanagement of love and feeling. If love is true love, it should not lead to death. Many commit suicide when their lover jilted them while some lose part of their senses. He may be temporarily insane.

Love is an intense feeling of affection and cares towards another person. It is a profound and caring attraction. On the other hand, lust is a strong desire of a sexual nature. With the above definition, compare what “you or them” engaged your precious time with on V-DAY, Love or Lust?

Moral Decadence: The Order of V – Day

V-DAY is the day many girls will lose their virginity. Many many unwanted pregnancies. Many broken homes in the name of Valentine. It is just like we established V-DAY to ruin people’s life. There are two stories on V-DAY I read that shocked me. Stephen Grant walked into the Macomb County Police Department on a Valentine’s Day and reported his wife missing. Three weeks later they found her torso in his garage. 34-year-old Tara Lynn Grant was killed by her husband in their home in Washington Township, Mich. And this was just the beginning…… Here is another one.

Gibson Paul was living with Tomicka Peterson in West Palm Beach. But on Valentine’s Day of 2011 Tomicka decided she no longer wanted to live with Gibson and certainly did not want him to be her Valentine, which is one of the reasons he is crying in his mugshot (yes, that is his real mugshot, not a still from the “why he doesn’t want me, man?” episode of Fresh Prince where Will confronts his estranged father). Valentine’s Date Turns Out To Be a Setup for Murder!

In my tender age, I have read a lot of stories about lovers. Many Yoruba films have illustrated the different fate of lovers. Some stories end happily, some sadly while some are in the middle resulting in a perfect division of Drama.

Honestly, I understand that no one can stay without having feelings for others – psychologically inevitable. Blood also runs in my vein and I also have affection for opposite sex but this should not land us in the dirty act. Don’t taste a food that belongs to you in haste. Be patient, cook it well and sit balance to eat it. I can assure you that you will get tired if not fed up.

The moral decadence is just too much. Preaching from here and there is like music. We listen for entertainment sake. Although some religious leader tail with February 14th Saga. They indirectly sell immorality. They will soon come to know! It is absurd to pick a day in marking love. No, true love is not like that. In fact, what they are celebrating does not represent love.

There is nothing in celebrating V-DAY. It just a means to prompt immorality in the society. Our women folks will be made to walk half naked. The government are not ready to make a change. The woman of today is not the women we desire. We need women that can compete with men intellectual.

In conclusion, there is danger in celebrating V-DAY, V-DAY itself is a danger. Valentine day may be dangerous. It causes everlasting sorrow. Abstain from it.
