The Lagos branch of Igbo apex socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo, has endorsed the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, as their preferred candidate in the March 9 Gubernatorial election.

This proclamation was made during an emergency session of the socio-cultural group held on Sunday, March 4, at the MUSON Centre, Onikan Lagos. The event was presided over by the President of the Lagos chapter, Chief Solomon Ogbonna, and had in attendance market leaders, high profiled personalities and other affiliate bodies from the Igbo ethnic extraction living in Lagos.

Is this decision made as a result of recent threats to Igbo businesses in Lagos?

Business interests of the Igbo ethnic group have come under immense threat as a result of the February 23rd presidential election results in Lagos. The APC won the election but with a low margin while many Igbo dominated localities in the states witnessed high votes for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates across the board.

Violence was also reported in areas where the opposition was alleged to have won some National Assembly seats due to massive support from the Igbos. In response, political thugs were reported to have closed business locations or threatened Igbo trading in Lagos.

OjoMedaline gathered at that this incident happened in Oshodi, Ago-Palace Way/Okota, Saka Tinuba VI among others. Some top local government officials were also reported to have given direct instruction to the Igbo traders in their areas to either vote APC during the gubernatorial election or consider their business existence over in the area.

APC will never consider losing Lagos as an option on the table, and more political moves are expected as the day of the election draws closer.
